Metadata

Use metadata for stable information about a log rather than repeating it on every record.

What metadata is for

Metadata is information that describes the log itself. For example, an equipment log might store asset ID, location, manufacturer, or responsible department as metadata.

Metadata vs record fields

Use record fields when the value changes from entry to entry. Use metadata when the value is stable and should be stored once for the log.

Maintaining metadata

Review metadata when equipment, ownership, location, or responsibility changes. Updates should be made by authorized users.
