Fields

Fields define the structure of each record entered into a log.

Field planning

Before adding fields, decide what information must be consistent on every record. Good field design reduces free-form notes and makes records easier to review later.

Common field types

Field typeUse
TextNames, notes, identifiers, short descriptions.
NumberCounts, readings, measurements, quantities.
BooleanYes/no, pass/fail, complete/incomplete values.
DateInspection dates, due dates, completion dates.
Date and timeTimestamped events where time matters.

Required fields

Use required fields for information that must always be captured. Avoid making every field required unless the process truly needs it.
